Kenneth Fire near Calabasas almost completely contained
Jan 11, 2025
The Kenneth Fire, which erupted in the western part of the San Fernando Valley earlier this week, is now 80% contained, officials say.
The blaze was first reported around 2:30 p.m. Thursday in an area of dry brush in the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space, the entrance of which is located at the western end of Victory Boulevard north of the 101 Freeway and the exclusive Hidden Hills neighborhood.
Within four hours, the fire had grown to 960 acres. Like the other fires burning in the region, it was fueled by incredibly strong Santa Ana winds.

By 9 p.m. Thursday, crews had made considerable progress, achieving 35% containment and limiting the flames to around 1,000 acres.

In the latest update, issued just before 7:45 a.m. Saturday, the Ventura County Fire Department stated that the Kenneth Fire remained at 1,052 acres with 80% containment.
Nearly 250 personnel will remain at the scene to patrol the fire and conduct mop up operations on any remaining hot spots, VCFD said.
In a status update, CalFire reiterated that suppression efforts are well under way in the area for the now-most contained wildfire in SoCal; as of publication, the 800-acre Hurst Fire in Sylmar was 76% contained.
“Firefighters worked throughout [Friday] to mop up hot spots and improve containment lines, adding to the overall containment of this fire,” CalFire said. “Firefighters will continue monitoring and patrolling to ensure the fire remains within its established perimeter.”
Palisades Fire threatens San Fernando Valley, forcing new evacuation warnings
Citizens detained a man who they believed was setting a fire in the area around 4:30 p.m. Thursday and he was taken into police custody; however, Dominic Choi with Los Angeles Police Department later stated that the department’s preliminary investigation indicated that “there was not enough probable cause to arrest this person on arson or suspicion of arson.”
The Kenneth Fire erupted just days after the devastating and deadly Palisades and Eaton fires, which are both considered to be among the most expensive wildfires in state history.
Other fires, such as the Sunset, Hurst and Lidia fires, also broke out earlier this week while the L.A. area experienced hurricane-force winds, low humidity and critically dry terrain.
