WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) -- Warwick police are investigating a deadly motor vehicle crash that happened early Saturday morning. Around 12:02 a.m., officers were called to 100 Centerville Rd. for a single vehicle accident involving a Nissan Rogue that hit the stone wall center of a round-about and caught fire. When officers arrived on scene, they attempted to put out the flames and remove the driver, but were unable to immediately gain access.. Fire crews were able to put out the fire when they arrived on. The operator, identified as 43-year-old Christopher Armstrong, was unconscious when first responders were able to get him out of the SUV. He was the only person inside the vehicle. The victim was taken to Kent County Hospital, then transferred to Rhode Island Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. During there initial investigation, police say the vehicle was going south on Greenwich Ave. before turning west on to the Centerville Rd. extension. The vehicle then went off the road, through two lanes of travel, jumped the curb and struck the wall of the round-about. Police said one witness did remain on scene, but any other witnesses are asked to call the Warwick Police Department at 468-4200.
