Oakland (Special to OaklandNewsOnline.com) – Harold Lowe, whom this Oakland Blogger teased for his very late arrival in the 2022 Oakland City Council District Two Election, wrote a long missive on NextDoor that made some interesting claims. Here’s what he wrote, in total, followed by a review. Harold Lowe’s January 11th 2025 Post In NextDoor In this silly season before the election field has been settled, reasonable actions would have been to reach out to all candidates and ask for an interview, like we did with Empower Oakland. (Go look at the videos and see what some of these candidates have said….or not said; because they’re still around) This week, one of the Oakland unions’ met with only one candidate for Mayor, and two candidates for District 2. No other candidates were notified of the meeting or invited to share information via a questionnaire. Wellstone Democratic Club is doing the same thing, with the same people. There are 3 other groups lined up to follow the process. They have to game the system. You ever look up and say “how did we ever get these people?” This is how. The old guard that got us in this mess doesn’t have real solutions; the previous Council President in her last speech reflecting on her accomplishments, stated her lead in raising property taxes….. We cannot tax our way out of our predicament; but people who have never had for profit jobs cannot understand that. Their hand picked City Council candidates include one person who wasn’t even in Oakland at the time the pandemic started, but is running for two Council seats within 6 months. The old guard is supporting this person because it is the only way to advance their real candidate…..gotta love ranked choice. We cannot keep ceding responsibility to people who make secret deals to run Oakland. I promise you this: I am going to keep giving you solutions to help change our trajectory; I am going to be transparent, and I am going to call out the mess. I’m going to tell you the truth and treat you like the adults that you are. They are trying to buy these elections, again. It’s because you have shown them that you want change, and they know they have one chance to secure two seats. They are only successful when they keep you out of the room, but I am going to make sure you have a seat. Two years ago, I was the only person in any of the three City Council campaigns to speak about how we were heading for 15% cuts to balance our budget, how we were going to lose hundreds of businesses, and how there was no financial accountability at the Council. My kids came home from college break and I stayed up every night waiting for them to get in the house; we have to shop in Alameda, and we can’t walk around a clean Lake Merritt anymore. That is what this should be about. One that now Alameda County Supervisor Nikki Bas won handly: Where Harold is consistent is in his view that police cuts should have never happened. In this presentation he’s light on the non-profit-oriented service delivery question. One wonders if that’s the case today, in 2025? Stay tuned.
