Hammond man, 68, arrested in drug bust investigation

HAMMOND, La. (WGNO) — A man has been arrested following a drug bust that happened in Hammond on Thursday, Jan 9.
According to the Hammond Police Department, multiple tips led to detectives investigating 68-year-old Jimmy "Candyman" Smith for allegedly selling drugs.

While investigating, detectives say they saw Smith, who had an outstanding felony warrant, sitting in his vehicle at his home on North Ruland Street. Detectives and Officers then arrested Smith and reportedly found what they believe to be marijuana, methamphetamine, heroin, a loaded handgun and cash.

Police then searched the home and found multiple pieces of drug paraphernalia, multiple prescription pills, suspected promethazine, more suspected marijuana and multiple packages of Suboxone.

Because Smith was a convicted felon, it was illegal for him to possess a firearm.
Following the investigation, he was booked into the Hammond City Jail.
