Small weekend snow chances; more arctic air coming
Jan 11, 2025
What a week we've had! After starting the week with the largest snowstorm we've had in years, we had the coldest temperatures in nearly a year, followed by another round of snow to bookend the week on Friday. This last round brought 3.7" of snowfall to Indianapolis yesterday. Many other locations saw 4 and 5 inches! Bloomington and Lebanon came out on top Friday with a snowfall report of 5.5" in those locations.
Indianapolis has picked up 12.4" of snow this season. Plus, we had an additional few inches of snow before the start of the season in November. We've had quite the string of lackluster snow seasons in recent years. In this week alone, we have already picked up more snow than we had all last season.
A few flurries will linger today but overall we are quieter this weekend. We still have more snow chances in the forecast before the weekend is out but it won't amount to very much compared to our systems prior this week. A few rounds of isolated snow showers will slide across the state Sunday, primarily in the afternoon and evening. A few tenths of an inch are possible. This will easily lead to more slick spots developing. In addition, some of this precipitation may come in the form of freezing drizzle. Again, slick conditions developing will be a concern. Continue to allow extra time to drive slower on the roadways.
Temperatures have been below freezing for more than 8 consecutive days. We fell below freezing before 4 AM on Friday, January 3rd and have been there since. We have a small chance to break above freezing Sunday but it will be close!
We're in for another blast of arctic air with temperatures tumbling Monday into Tuesday. Air temperatures Wednesday morning are expected to fall below zero with wind chills below -10°.
