JAY COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) -- Jay County and surrounding EMS, Sheriff's, Fire and Police Departments are mourning after a paramedic died while on duty Friday night.
Saturday morning, Jay County EMS posted on Facebook,
"It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to a great paramedic, coworker, father and friend. At approximately 8 pm on 1/10/2025, all of us heard those chilling words "Man down, CPR in progress" within our own walls. We deal with death in ways that most people outside of our EMS world would not and could not understand. But to apply our skills to one of our own...there are simply no words to describe our pain and anguish."
The post went on to say that Larry Nuckols, the fallen paramedic, had served over 30 years with EMS services after his retirement from the US Army. The post continued to discuss Nuckols's impact.
It doesn't make it any easier, but there is comfort in knowing you were right where you wanted to be, serving your community. Rest easy, my friend. You've done your part. We will take it from here; your work is complete. Larry, my friend, you will be sorely missed.

Many fellow county officials and state-level officials commented on the post, sharing their words and personal stories with Nuckols.
It is unclear at this time what caused Nuckols to collapse or if he was responding to a scene at the time of his collapse.
Jay County Sheriff's Office did post late Friday night to avoid the area SR 67 between US 27 and 200 E. It is unclear if these events are connected.
