ELKHART, Ind. (WANE) -- A man is in serious condition after being struck by his own vehicle following a crash on an Indiana Toll Road Friday evening.
Just after 7 p.m., Indiana State Police responded to calls of a crash, where a man had been struck outside his vehicle after a crash on the roadway.
Preliminary investigation indicated that an SUV was traveling eastbound on the told road when it spun out and crashed at the 94-mile marker, two miles east of the Elkhart exit. The SUV came to a rest facing south across the eastbound lanes, when the driver, a 19-year-old man from Frankfort, IL, got out of the SUV.
While the driver was out of the vehicle, the SUV was struck by a semi, which caused the SUV to hit the driver, throwing the man into the ditch on the south side of the road.
The driver was taken to an area hospital in serious condition. The driver of the semi was not injured in the crash.
The roadway was shut down following the crash but reopened shortly after 8 p.m. after the crash investigation and vehicles were removed.
Roads were slick at the time of the crash due to the falling snow.
