SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) - As fires spread through Southern California, communities are coming together to support those affected. A Louisiana native now living in Los Angeles shared how he and others have stepped in to help those in need.
Jalen St. Romain, better known as "DJ Noodlez," a native of the Shreveport, Bossier City area moved to Los Angeles 2 years ago. He said since Monday, grocery stores have been packed with many evacuees in need of essentials, and in return, many communities are coming together and providing critical support to those affected. St. Romain explains why he decided to join the volunteer effort.
"So, where I live downtown L.A., you can actually see from like the mountain top of the fire just like spreading, you know, over time since like Monday," St. Romain said. "A lot of L.A. natives are saying like this is the biggest fire and the impact that they've seen in 50+ years. The air quality, I mean, is bad. People walking around like it's covid again with masks - its bad."
Although wildfires are not the type of natural disaster that Jalen is accustomed to being from Louisiana, the ominous, smoke-filled skies in Los Angeles could not deter him from stepping in to help those in need.
"These wildfires, I mean, being from Shreveport, bossier, in Louisiana, you see, like you said, hurricanes, tornadoes, flash floods, or things of that nature, sometimes snow, but I hear it's a little different," said St. Romain.
St. Romain said many people left with only the clothes on their backs and the vehicles they arrived in, so the needs are numerous and immediate.
"I think a lot of people are donating like canned foods, a lot of water, I'm seeing a lot of diapers and formula, because a lot of the stores and a lot of the grocery stores are sold out and so I've seen a lot of needs of that cause you're talking about a family of 4 or 5, with younger kids, little kids, especially with school being out," he said.
