Boys Basketball Rush-Henrietta 66, Fairport 62 It was a battle of undefeated Class AAA teams on Friday night as Fairport hosted Rush-Henrietta, but the Royal Comets came out on top 66-62 to improve to 9-0 on the season.  Fairport opened the game with a 9-0 run and led 18-9 at the end of the first. All of its first-quarter points came from three-point shots.  The Red Raiders had a 20-point lead with just over five minutes to play in the second quarter, but Rush-Henrietta cut the deficit to trail 33-24 at the break.  The Royal Comets kept the momentum going in the third, closing the gap to 48-43 with one quarter left to play. With just under seven minutes to go, Jalen Taggart hit a three-point jumper to tie the game 50-50. Rush-Henrietta's first lead of the game came on a layup from Jahquin Brown with 5:30 to go as it pulled ahead 55-53.  The Royal Comets maintained the lead for the rest of the game to earn the comeback victory and hand the Red Raiders their first loss of the season.  Taggart led the way for Rush-Henrietta with 24 points, followed by Avery Council with 14.  Landon Brunken led Fairport with 15 points. LaShard Lowry and Alexander Grejda each had 14. Rush-Henrietta (9-0) will host Hilton on Wednesday, January 15th. Fairport (8-1) will travel to Penfield on the same evening.  Athena 72, Sutherland 57 Leading by just four points at the half, the Trojans pulled away in the third quarter to stay undefeated on the season. Athena led 20-10 after the first quarter, but Sutherland responded in the second to trail just 35-31 heading into the third. The Trojans dominated the frame, outscoring the Knights 22-13 to lead by 13 at the end of the third. Sutherland opened the quarter with a three-point play by Chase Dermody to make it a ten-point game, but the win was never in doubt for Athena in the fourth quarter. Russell Ellis led the way with 17 points and six assists for the Trojans. Dominic LaMar had 15 points, I'Zayah Reaves tallied 14 points, and Ne'Sean Fowlks and I'Zick Reaves both had eight points. Jackson Birch had a game-high 20 points for Sutherland. Sam Byrne and Tyler Allen each netted eight points. Athena (8-0) will try to keep their undefeated season alive when they host Canandaigua on Wednesday, January 15th. Sutherland (6-3) will host Brighton on Monday, January 13th. Thomas 66, Brighton 54 The Titans stormed out to a 22-point halftime lead, cruising to their seventh win of the season. After giving up the first four points of the game and going scoreless for nearly three minutes, the Titans ended the first quarter on a 20-2 run to put the Bruins quickly away with a 20-6 first-quarter lead. Thomas (7-2) will host Irondequoit on Wednesday, January 15th. Brighton (2-5) will try to bounce back when they travel to Sutherland on Monday, January 13th. School of the Arts 66, Churchville-Chili 62 Latrell Ingram's 23 points led School of the Arts in a win over Churchville-Chili, defeating the Saints 66-60.  SOTA led 13-12 at the end of the first quarter, but Churchville-Chili rallied back to go out front 30-24 at the half.  The Silverhawks responded after the break and pulled back in front, 46-38, with one quarter left to play. Ingram led the way in the fourth with eight points as SOTA maintained the lead to come away with the win at home.  Ishmael Gonzales added 14 points in the win, followed by Zayvier Little and Bennie Laver each with nine. Quincy St. Louis put up five points, and Paul Stevens scored four.  Churchville-Chili was led by Jason Small with 15 points, and Brayden Stedman followed with 14. Josh Miner had eight points, and Jacob Gonzalez put up six.  SOTA (3-6) will travel to Waterloo on Wednesday, January 15th. Churchville-Chili (2-7) will travel to Brighton on the same evening.  World of Inquiry 79, Rochester Prep 59 The top-ranked team in the state stayed unbeaten on Friday, as the Griffins took down Rochester Prep. Curtis Bell led the way with 28 points, also grabbing seven rebounds. Kanaz Linder registered a double-double, tallying 21 points and 13 rebounds. Marcus Norwood had 17 points. Jaedon Adams-Griffin filled the box score, tallying 10 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and six steals. Kyon Shaw led Rochester Prep with 24 points. Jahmere Brown also reached double-digits, putting up 11 points. World of Inquiry (7-0) will host Mynderse Academy on Monday, January 13th. Rochester Prep (5-5) will visit Avon on Tuesday, January 14th. The two teams met in the season-opener, with Shaw scoring a buzzer-beater to win the game. Girls Basketball Penfield 46, Fairport 37 Emma Alexander's 15 points led the way for Penfield as the Patriots earned a 46-37 victory over Fairport.  Fairport started the game with a 9-2 lead, but back-to-back threes from Alexander and Audrey Funk helped the Red Raiders cut the deficit to 11-10 at the end of the first quarter.  Penfield pulled ahead in the second, but Fairport closed the gap to bring the score to 19-19 at the buzzer.  The Patriots took an eight-point lead in the third quarter, but seven unanswered points from the Red Raiders put them right back in it, trailing 32-31 with one quarter left to play. The fourth quarter was controlled by Penfield as they went on a 14-6 run to seal the win. Bella Cahoon scored seven of her career-high nine points in the final quarter to lead Penfield to the victory.  Cassidy Cone added 10 points for the Patriots and Audriana Funk put up five. Fairport was led by Samara Rizzo and Courtney Merlo, each with nine points. Penfield (6-2) will host Rush-Henrietta on Tuesday, January 14th. Fairport (5-2) will host Hilton on the same evening.  Schroeder 54, Brighton 28 The Warriors scored the first 14 points of the game to cruise to victory, snapping a two-game losing streak. Bria Watkins led the way with 21 points for the Warriors. Addison Morgan added 10 points for Schroeder. Ella Hall paced the Bruins, netting 12 points. Schroeder (7-2) will hit the road to take on Irondequoit on Tuesday, January 14th. Brighton (2-7) will host Victor on the same evening. Brockport 43, Irondequoit 40 Lydia Childs scored 29 points for the Blue Devils, leading Brockport to a comeback victory on the road. Brockport led 16-12 at halftime, but the Eagles had a strong third quarter to lead 28-25 heading into the fourth. The Eagles led for most of the fourth quarter and were in front 38-32 with 2:41 left in the game. However, the Blue Devils finished strong. Trailing 40-39 with just under a minute to play, Brockport broke Irondquoit's press and got the ball to Childs who went in for the game-winning basket. Irondequoit had three possessions in the final minute to try and get the go-ahead or game-tying basket, but they came up empty each time. Their final attempt came with 5.2 seconds left when they suffered a turnover over shortly after the ball was inbounded. Childs added seven rebounds to her game-high 29 points. Keira Wilson had ten rebounds and three points, while Janelle Laureano pocketed five steals. Aubrey Smith led the Eagles with 17 points. Brockport (6-3) will host Churchville-Chili on Tuesday, January 14th. The Blue Devils have now won three of their last four games. Irondequoit (3-6) will host Schroeder on the same evening. Pal-Mac 59, Wayne 28 Taryn Goodness reached 1,000 points for her career as the Red Raiders earned their fifth straight win. Goodness needed just four points to reach the milestone and did not take long to get there, scoring the game's first four points. The Red Raiders cruised to victory, leading 25-13 after halftime before scoring the first 14 points of the third quarter to build a 39-13 margin. Pal-Mac (6-3) has won five straight games after dropping three of their first four contests, two against Class AA opponents. They will host Rush-Henrietta on Wednesday, January 15th. Wayne (1-7) will try and snap a six-game losing streak when they host Geneva on the same night. The Eagles took down the Panthers 44-34 on December 11th for their first win of the season. C.G. Finney 78, Northstar Christian 31 After leading 17-12 after the first quarter, the undefeated Falcons flexed their muscles the rest of the way. Finney outscored Northstar 61-19 in the final three quarters to earn their seventh win to open the season. Allie Frederickson led the way with 30 points and 13 rebounds for the Falcons. Kiley Knittle also registered a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Lucy Broome tallied 16 points while Lainey Vargas had 10. Abby Schner paced the Knights with ten points, followed by Elsi Oechsie with nine. Finney (7-0) will visit School of the Arts on Monday, January 13th. After that road game, the Falcons will have five straight contests at home. Northstar (5-5) will visit HAC on Saturday, January 11th.
