Blog: Snoway!
Jan 11, 2025
Good morning! If you stayed up late last night -- great chance you experienced snowfall across the region, however, waking up early this morning that's a different story as the dreaded rain-snow has crept into the area.
Through the early morning through, snowfall did accumulate across parts of town! Totals through 3am show an inch or so in most locations, with up to 3" in locations along the Peninsulas & Eastern Shore.
Developing overnight, though, was a wintry mix that blended in along the state line and the southside. So moving forward... expect a wintry mix to continue through sunrise for most locations across Hampton Roads. Locations closer to Williamsburg, the Middle Peninsula, and most of the Eastern Shore will see snow continue through daybreak -- boosting those totals to minor winter wonderland status (for COVA standards, of course).
Parts of the Peninsula and the Southside will experience that wintry mix and even some rain through sunrise. This will put a damper on those snowfall totals -- but will keep roads slick through the mid-late morning timeframe. Care driving!!
And across NE North Caroline, expect some ice and mostly rain through early/mid morning or so.
Precipitation comes to an end pretty quickly this morning as the system races offshore, pulling in some cold dry air for most of our weekend. This will welcome back sunshine as the day progresses and that could climb our temperatures to near 40°.
Roadways will remain slick through the morning, especially the less traveled streets, neighborhood roads, backroads, etc. Fortunately with the sunshine roads will improve around lunch time and into the evening. However, any melting that doesn't dry from the sunshine will refreeze and ice up tonight. Something to keep in mind for any early Sunday morning travel. This shouldn't be on main roads or highways -- but any road or street that sees a lot of shade during the day.
Lows tonight are expected to drop big time -- many spots could wake up in the 20s, with some inland locations in the upper teens. Cold sunshine then expected for the remainder of the weekend with highs tomorrow pinned in the 30s.
Cold sunshine will also hold for days to follow... highs will be pinned in the 30s most days next week with lows in the 20s. A reinforcing shot of cold air does arrive mid/late week to keep it feeling like winter!
Enjoy the wintry weather safely this weekend and stay warm!
