Busy rush at stores as winter weather rolls in

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton Roads hasn't had snow on the ground in a long time, and now that there is some, you've seen a rush at grocery and hardware stores.
Shoppers were out and about all across in Hampton Roads Friday preparing for snow and searching for winter supplies.
Many offered tips on ways to stay safe.
"Don't move your car too much because you don't want to get in accidents," said Hampton Roads resident Bless Walker. "Drive with caution and walk with caution and pray," said Hampton Roads resident Bless Walker.
Tow truck driver Alan Stone agrees. We met him picking up salt from Taylor's Do It Center.
"Definitely dealing with black ice, definitely want to go between 20 to 15 under the speed limit just so you can be prepared and stopping distance is very key," Stone said.
Picking up extra bags of salt to put in your trunk for extra traction will help too, and even after this pre-storm rush, those highly sought after items are in stock.
"They were pretty in stock so far, mainly salt and shovels," said resident Clyde Tillman.
Whether you need a shovel or a case of water, take your time when driving from store to store.
"Definitely take your time on the roads," Tillman said. "Get home safe, drive safe and avoid anything at all costs dealing with black ice."
