ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Rochester police say security measures the city put in place back in September are working to keep violence down in the East End Entertainment District. A shooting in the entertainment district area on September 22 triggered a response from city leaders and police to make changes. Six days later, it was decided barricades would surround the area every Saturday night, and they have been there since. "We said, this can't happen in our entertainment district," Captain Greg Bello with the Rochester Police Department told News 8. "Our entertainment district people, when they go out to have a good time, need to be safe in doing that." When those changes were first introduced, they meant no one over the age of 21 would be allowed within the "special events zone," which police would monitor until the bars closed at 3 a.m. "Frequently what we were seeing is people going down there and hanging out and not going to those establishments and not enjoying those establishments more, coming down there and hanging out and causing problems down there," Bello said. The idea was to take the entertainment district and give it the same security measures other city events have, such as Party in the Park or the Lilac Festival. "So, that's included increased police presence, increased private security presence, and working together collaboratively with all of the establishments in the area," Bello said. Those who passed through had to be 21 and over, but working with businesses in the area, the city changed that rule to an age requirement of 18 and over. Captain Bello said the security measures have been working. "We have not had a single incident of gun violence or any major problems down there during those times," Bello said. "And so, we're going to continue that." News 8 asked Bello why he thinks it's working. "People see the increased security presence. They know this isn't a place for me to come and create trouble anymore. And so, what we're seeing down there is people that are going out to have a good time, and they're going out and having a good time safely. And that's exactly what we're looking for," he said. News 8 also asked how the businesses within the district have responded. "We're continuing to work with the business owners that are down there, and there's back and forth communication, because we have to prioritize safety, and we're going to continue to prioritize safety, but at the same time heeding that input from those business owners," Bello said. Captain Bello also said police will continue to work with the city to make appropriate changes depending on the time of year and keep safety top of mind.
