SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — With weakened winds, Los Angeles fire crews have made some headway towards gaining control of the deadly wildfires that have scorched thousands of acres in and around the county. As of 4 p.m. Friday, Cal Fire estimates firefighters have been able to get limited containment of the two biggest wildfires still raging in the area, the Palisades and Eaton Fires. The Palisades Fire is at an estimated containment of 8%, while the Eaton Fire is at 3%. However, that does not mean the threat to neighborhoods nearby the wildfires is anywhere near over, nor is the work fire crews have towards extinguishing them completely. Fire crews gain limited containment on Palisades Fire; homes still threatened For those who are not familiar with the lingo, containment is one of a number of terms used by fire officials to describe wildfire suppression efforts, specifically referring to the primary focus of crews in the early stages of taming an out-of-control wildland fire: stopping spread. Containment differs from control, or the end of suppression efforts. Per the National Wildlife Coordinating Group, containment indicates how much of the burn site firefighters been able to establish a control line for, thus preventing flames to move beyond that point. As the Western Fire Chiefs Association explains, these barriers can either be man-made, such as firebreaks dug into the ground or borders where all burnable vegetation has been removed, or naturally occurring like rivers. So, for a blaze at 0% containment, that means fire crews have not yet been able to establish any control lines around the site of the blaze. A blaze at 100% containment has control lines around the entire perimeter. Fire officials only determine portions of a wildfire are contained if they are confident it will not surpass control lines, although it is never guaranteed. Winds could still cause jumping, when flames are ignited in a new place away from the main burn area. Even if the fire is completely contained, flames may remain active inside the control lines and require more work for it to be completely extinguished, including cooling hotspots or letting flames burn through any untouched areas inside containment.
