NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Both Hampton and Newport News spent the day preparing for a winter storm that will likely hit, but to what extent, we'll soon find out. “Once the snow starts falling, we will put down the rock salt and the wet snow activates the rock salt," said Jason Calbert, Newport News' administrator of street maintenance. "Prior to that, we mix it with the water, and we put down the brine and put that down as a layer to prevent the snow from sticking to the road." Mike Holtzclaw, communications coordinator for the city of Hampton, showed how the brine was mixed at the city's winter weather facility. “This right here is where the brine is mixed," Holtzclaw said. "We take rock salt and mix it with fresh water. We are looking for 2 to 4 inches of snow, probably starting around 7 tonight, then going overnight and then very cold temperatures over the weekend. There could be refreezing." Super Doppler 10 meteorologists say that the forecast is promising for snow across most of Hampton Roads, but that the storm will be a fast-moving one.  Across the Peninsula and Eastern Shore, the storm is expected to be an all-snow event, with snow totals up around five inches in some spots. Hampton started pretreating its roads Thursday morning, working on priority routes and main arterial routes — anything in front of hospitals, fire stations and places like those.
