Virginia Beach prepped to go for next 12 hours as snow makes its way

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Weather can change in a matter of minutes, and that’s what had Virginia Beach crews busy Thursday and Friday as a winter storm was heading to the Hampton Roads region.
There are four locations in the city where trucks will be able to get salt. The dome holds more than 1,600 tons of salt that will be going on the roads.
“We started earlier this week," said Phillip Koetter, Operations Manager with Virginia Beach Public Works. Our staff that are going to be manning the trucks tonight starting on the inclement weather. Teams started at 6 p.m. [Friday], and we’ll run a full implementation until 6 a.m. ... and then we’ll evaluate the conditions at that point."
More than 700 miles of the city have been prepped with brine solution.
“We’ll be watching those and the other trouble spots also,” Koetter said.
Koetter said the city is expecting 1 to 3 inches of snow, but with how big Virginia Beach is, he said he will be ready to adapt.
“You'll know Virginia Beach is fairly large between the South Park neighboring North Carolina or on the Chesapeake Bay,” said Koetter.
Koetter says public works is also ready to work once the snow melts.
“The freezing is always more of a challenge. And with the brine that we put down, we don't expect a lot of rain or anything with this. So the Brian should help and deter that freezing also,” said Koetter.
Digital signs will be on to update drivers about the conditions of bridges and overpasses.
“We will put those on flash as if the bridge starts to freeze up. We don’t want the traffic going down the bridge to have to slow down for a stoplight,” said Koetter.
Public works does not go down residential areas. If you are driving and spot a truck working, give it space, don’t speed around it.
