VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — As wildfires wreak havoc on southern California, at least 10 people have died and hundreds of thousands have been forced to evacuate their homes. Two members from the Virginia Beach-based Operation Blessing flew to Los Angeles Thursday to join four others who came from across the globe to help first responders putting their lives in danger. The reality is hitting Benjamin Brittain with Operation Blessing."As you're turning your phones on and getting the evacuation alarms and all that, waking up in the middle of the night, you can imagine how people are just really scared and worried,” Brittain said Friday. That's why folks with Operation Blessing left Virginia Beach, hopped on a plane Thursday and woke up this morning near the heart of the devastation.“To think that we're able to get out here while it's still going on and be able to actively support first responders and those who have been impacted by the disaster," Brittain said, "it's really a privilege for us and an honor to do it."They met with churches and partners this morning before serving meals to 500 first responders."Without them, I mean who knows what would be happening," Brittain said. "So to be able to support them is just crucial just because they're really the ones who are protecting the whole city right now."They'll feed another 500 on Saturday. Operation Blessing is a non-profit humanitarian organization which has helped provide hunger relief, clean water, medical care and disaster relief to millions for more than 40 years. This team will assess the situation and the need in Los Angeles, and extend the trip based on what they see."We are getting the meals prepped, we have those for today and tomorrow," Brittain said. "We're looking at sourcing some other spots to be able to ramp that up even further potentially."If you'd like to help Operation Blessing in their mission, visit https://www.ob.org/.
