Snowboarders hit downtown Memphis 'slopes'

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- It wasn't exactly the killer slopes of Vail, Colorado, but a group of avid snowboarders weren't about to let some fresh powder downtown go to waste.
A couple of weeks ago, Corhonda Dawson and her daughter Nya Bolton were snowboarding in Banff, Canada, and Friday hit the "slope" at the Beale Street Landing.

"I snowboard all over the world. I was just excited to have snow," Dawson said.

Dawson said she began skiing about 17 years ago. She said when her kids got older, they wanted to learn how to snowboard, so she decided to give it a try, too.

The outdoor enthusiast said that although conditions were not ideal for snowboarding, it was a perfect day.
"It's kind of sticky, you know, but it slides. I've fallen and gone down the stairs. So, it's all good," Dawson said. "May as well make the best of this winter storm."
Dawson said snowboarding is challenging to learn, but unlike skiing, it is easier to master.
The downtowner said that every time it snows, they get out their boards and head to Tom Lee Park.
