HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Hawaii is well on its way to becoming the first fully fiber-enabled state in the nation. Get Hawaii's latest morning news delivered to your inbox, sign up for News 2 You State leaders joined Hawaiian Telcom in a press conference on Friday, Jan. 10 to provide an update on implementing a fiber network statewide to provide fast, reliable digital connectivity for families statewide. CA couple in Hawaii sentenced for stealing $1.3M in federal funds Hawaiian Telcom announced that by the end of next year, it will complete its fiber infrastructure expansion to all islands, enabling access to its 100% fiber internet and TV service. "For many of our communities, particularly those in underserved areas, access to high-speed broadband can be transformative. It opens doors to education, health care and economic opportunities," said Su Shin, Hawaiian Telcom president. Fiber builds have been completed on Lanai and the topside of Molokai. Kauai is scheduled to be completed by the end of January. Maui is set to be completed by the end of 2025. "Fiber optic broadband expansion equals digital equity. People in Hana and Honolua can get the same access as the people in Honolulu. We can have, not just access to Honolulu and throughout the state, but throughout the world and that means a lot to people from rural communities.
