BAMBERG COUNTY, SC (WOLO) — The Bamberg County Council Administration is getting an $856 thousand dollar grant to help them make stormwater upgrades in some of the heavy floods zones. The money was provided by the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority (SCIRA) and according to council, those funds are desperately needed after going through several severe weather events in 2024 including, Tropical Storm Debby and Helene. Both storms left the area with massive flooding that made numerous roads and highways impossible the use.
The loss of access to those major thoroughfares left many citizens in the area unable to get to numerous services. Specifically, in the City of Bamberg’s Historic district, and in close proximity to the Courthouse, Courthouse Annex, Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Services Department. Officials say the proposed improvements will keep the area from having to endure heavy flooding moving forward, but also from having to deal with the price tag that comes with fixing damage associated with it.
According to officials, at this time the proposed plan will use SC RIA State Grant Funds to reinforce the stormwater system currently in place creating an additional 1,960 feet of stormwater infrastructure, and 11 inlets along with a 24 inch pipe. They hope the changes will better manage stormwater flow in their areas most prone to flooding like the main highway U.S. 301 as well as Second Street.
Work is slated to begin in the Fall and is expected to last roughly nine months.
