Los Angeles county officials say they are now investigating 11 deaths related to the series of wildfires that swept the area this week.Authorities cautioned that the death toll may be higher as responders have not been able to comb some of the hardest-hit areas. The announcement comes as firefighters are starting to get the upper hand on several major fires, most notably the Palisades Fire, which has impacted the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles, and the Eaton Fire, which has impacted Pasadena.Combined, the two fires have destroyed over 10,000 structures. Palisades Fire The Palisades Fire is considered the largest and most destructive in Los Angeles County history, burning over 21,000 acres. Over 3,000 fire personnel are actively working to contain it. For the first time since it started on Monday, Los Angeles City Fire Department Kristin Crowley said they have gained ground and it is now 8% contained. The Los Angeles County Fire Department said a drone hit the wing of one of its two Canadair CL-415 fire response planes on loan from Canada on Thursday. The pilots did not know it happened at the time, but maintenance staff found a fist-sized hole in one wing after the aircraft landed. The plane will be prioritized for repairs over the weekend and they hope to have it back up in the air by Monday. Officials said if people fly drones in the response area, they will have shut down their aerial operations which have been critical in their efforts to contain the fires. The owner of the drone will be identified, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said. Eaton Fire Marrone said this fire has burned nearly 14,000 acres in the Altadena and Pasadena areas and is currently at 3% containment. There may be an additional 4,000 to 5,000 structures destroyed but assessments are still being made. Officials said Friday winds that helped drive the fire are weakening, giving firefighters room to make progress. The blaze is not expected to grow significantly.A firefighter suffered a "significant fall injury" while responding to the Eaton Fire and remains hospitalized, but Marrone said they are expected to make a full recovery. The National Guard is assisting in the Eaton Fire area with road closures and other needs as it relates to infrastructure.
