STATESVILLE, N.C. — A winter wonderland arrived in Statesville earlier Friday afternoon as 1-2 inches of the white stuff sprinkled Iredell County, bringing out the local kids as they took advantage of their snow day off from school. And in downtown, the flakes even brought out the inner child in most adults. “It’s awesome. I love the snow,” beams Shawn Snook. Snook is a lifelong Statesville Resident. It’s been three years since Iredell County saw any meaningful snow – and he and his 12-year-old son plan to take advantage of it. “Just sledding and four-wheeler riding, and all that stuff,” Snook adds, “All my friends hang out near us, so we go hang out with them and just have a good time.” “Had to close a little early,” says Bryan Adams. Adams moved from Florida three years ago, so this is his first time seeing snow in a while. He had to shut down his business, Galaxy Arcade, a few hours early today, but he doesn’t seem to mind. “It’s just a good vibe,” Adams explains. “When it’s this time of the year – you know, the holiday season, obviously, Christmas, New Year’s, everything’s passed, but it’s still a good vibe and it’s a cool thing to see.” But as temperatures fell and the snow turned to ice, road conditions quickly went south this evening. Major throughways across Iredell County from I-40 to Broad Street in downtown Statesville were quickly caked and covered in a slick sheen. But that didn’t stop everyone from revving up their engines. “It’s a little sketchy, because it’s twenty-something degrees, but it’s good so far,” says Dani Kerr, “Got new tires, so I’m just taking it easy.” “Four-wheel-drive helps, new tires help,” Kerr adds. “Just trying not to suddenly brake or gas is a good one. Just take it a lot slower than you [normally] would.”
