CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)—On Friday, Haven of Hope SC Navigational Center and several partners held a press conference discussing new resources and services offered to victims of domestic violence in the Lowcountry. The room was full of political leaders, survivors, community members, and activists sharing exciting news about onsite facilities opening close to home to provide quicker and faster services to those in need. “People need a simple one-stop shop where they can come and get access to this information. Create a physical location where they can come to get access to all of the different wraparound services. They’ll need everything from housing to legal aid to financial services,” said Jessica Vernan, the communications director of the Palmetto Hope Network. The Palmetto Hope Network, in partnership with Haven of Hope SC Navigational Center, was awarded $200,000 from that state to help provide more resources. Most of the funds are going towards two onsite facilities on Rivers Avenue and Ashley Phosphate Road, and the shelter in Andrews is privately funded. The vacant space will offer five bedrooms and three baths, a wing of onsite resources, and a relaxing living area. Organizers said it was time to open another facility since my sister’s house, another domestic violence organization, was starting to reach capacity. “Their hotel stays are at a maximum on most days, leaving these individuals trying to figure out where they’re going to put that mother and her children,” said Lisa Kennedy, the founder of Palmetto Hope Network. Officials said this is just the start, and there is still more work left to be done, and they’re hoping for more community support. “For us to move forward and continue helping victims, we’re going to need the community’s support—the same support that we have every year,” said Butch Kennedy, The founder of Palmetto Hope Network. Organizers said they hope to open their doors in late February this year. And, if you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, call your local law enforcement agency.
