GM’s Queensland receives big honor, but Superlarks fall to Lions
Jan 10, 2025
GRAND MEADOW – Grand Meadow senior Lauren Queensland didn’t find her team on the winning side of the scoreboard in a 59-49 loss to Spring Grove Friday, but Queensland certainly established herself as a winner as it was announced that she is the first ever GM student to be named a Sub Region 2 AAA winner.
The AAA award honors student athletes who excel in arts, athletics and academics. Queensland has a 4.0 GPA, while being active in volleyball, basketball, track and field, choir, and solo and ensemble.
“I try really hard in my academics and I’m involved in a lot of extracurriculars. It’s really cool to be recognized for it,” Queensland said. “I just try my best to prioritize the next that’s coming, like the next test. I try to take it one thing at a time and try not to think about everything at once. Sports are a good place for me to go to not think about anything but my teammates and my friends. It’s a great place to let go.”
Queensland put up 23 points, seven rebounds and three assists in the loss for the Superlarks (8-2 overall), but her father and coach Ryan Queensland was more impressed with how she’s been able to balance her busy life at such a young age.
“I’m very proud of (Lauren). She’s learned from good teammates before and her two older sisters,” Ryan said. “She does a nice job of her time management in balancing the academics, the athletics and the arts. She really enjoys all three and she has fun in all of it. So much now it seems we just want to focus on one sport or one thing and you want to see athletes involved in multiple sports and extracurricular activities. I just think that’s super important.”
The Superlarks trailed 11-4 early on, but they rallied back to take a 28-26 halftime lead, and they held a 44-35 advantage after Aspen Kolling hit a three with 9:51 left in the game. That’s when the Lions (7-3 overall) cranked up their full court pressure and their defense helped them put together a 22-2 run over an eight-minute stretch to take a 57-46 lead. SG made its biggest strike when Siri Konkel, who scored 21 points, hit a three-pointer to give her team a 50-46 lead with 4:31 left in the game.
“They really put the pressure on us,” Ryan said. “They were kind of killing the clock early on and then they brought the pressure at the end. We were really fatigued at the end and we just lost our composure. We’ll learn from this and it’s a great opportunity. On the positive side, we know we can play with them, we’ve just got to finish the game.”
Junior Naomi Warmka finished with eight points and seven rebounds for GM.
SG 26 33 – 59
GM 28 21 – 49
GM scoring: Lauren Queensland, 23; Gracie Foster, 12; Naomi Warmka, 8; Aspen Kolling, 6
