FORECAST: Light snow tonight, wrapping up Saturday AM
Jan 10, 2025
Another frigid night has turned into a chilly day, but there have been some differences from the pattern we've been stuck in all week. One of those is that the wind has finally died down. Air temperatures are still in the 20s and 30s, but with no wind chill factor, it feels warmer when you step outside. The other change is that a blanket of clouds has spread out over the DMV. We'll have grey skies for the rest of the afternoon as the next storm system and a wave of light snow approaches. The good news is you'll have plenty of time to get out before the snow starts, with dry conditions expected to last through sunset.
This next wave of snow will not be as intense as we experienced on Monday, but it could still cause some headaches heading into Saturday morning. Everyone will see some snow, but only certain parts of the DMV will experience some steadier snow and slightly higher accumulations. Winter Weather Advisories have been issued from tonight through Saturday, where the steadier snow will fall, with the mountains of western MD (Garrett County) and southern MD back into the I-95 corridor of VA (DC included), the two main areas impacted.
Light snow will begin falling across the mountains as early as 7 PM, but the rest of the DMV won't see flakes until 10-11 PM tonight. This timing is a little earlier than we were expecting earlier in the week, but this also means the exit time of this snow has bumped up, too. Consistent light snow will continue through the early morning hours, with slightly steadier snow possible down toward central VA and southern MD around 2-5 AM. The snow will quickly wrap up after sunrise, around 7-8 AM, giving way to rapidly clearing skies for the rest of the day.
The highest totals will be found where the advisories are, with 2-4" possible through southern MD and across the mountains. The heart of the DMV, including DC, will only see 1-2", with even lower totals across the Shenandoah Valley and near the PA-MD line. While this doesn't even come close to Monday's totals, several locations still haven't dug out from the snow and ice earlier in the week, especially with how cold it has stayed. Out of precaution for the headaches any additional snow will cause, we've put a DMV First Warn in place on Saturday morning until the snow ends.
After this brief wintry weather is over, things are looking up for the rest of the weekend. High pressure will return, giving us plentiful sunshine and calm conditions on Sunday. Temperatures will rise slightly, reaching the upper 30s to lower 40s by Monday afternoon. This will be short-lived, unfortunately, as another surge of wind and colder air arrives on Tuesday. High temperatures will fall back into the 20s through the middle of next week, with low temperatures in the teens and a brutal wind chill back in place. Snow will likely be across the mountains as this colder air lingers, but everywhere else will stay dry and chilly.
Have a great weekend, and stay safe in the snow!
