MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) – Strosniders Hardware employee Hopeton Dobbs works outside, sometimes for hours at a time, and says working in freezing conditions poses a real challenge for him. Dobbs operates the forklift at the hardware store located in Kensington. He said the recent snowy weather has made it extremely tough for him to do his job. “It’s pretty tricky,” Dobbs said. “Two days ago, I just couldn’t move it. I just had to keep shoveling, and once the plow came through, I got some salt and put it down and work my way with the shovel until I get some good traction on it.” Parents divided on Montgomery County Public Schools’ decision to reopen schools amid icy road conditions Because the majority of his shift is spent outdoors, Dobbs makes sure to bundle up. “Right now I have five layers on," he said. "I have no choice because I’m the type of outdoor guy that pretty much operates the forklift. I get the ice melter off, the shovels, all that good stuff, so I have to always prepare for that each morning I come out here.” He said that although working in freezing conditions isn’t ideal, he doesn’t let the cold discourage him. “I try to get to bed by 9:30 or 10 o’clock, and then I get my full eight or nine hours in, and I’m up and I’m ready to go each day.” Bethesda neighbors frustrated with Montgomery County’s snow removal efforts Because he knows there are hundreds of shoppers counting on him. “I really love to help the customers,” Dobbs said. “Especially in these times of need when it is real cold. I just try to make sure they get the supplies they need. I help them inside the store and walk them to their cars with whatever products they need.” Montgomery County expects the wind chill to drop below 32 degrees. An Extreme Cold Alert has been activated until Saturday at 4 p.m.
