Local contractors impacted by rock salt shortage

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Local salt contractors tell News 8 they are suffering after American Rock Salt has allegedly paused their deliveries.
Thomas Landscape and Design as well as A.P. Enterprises say they may run into the problem of potentially running out of salt as a result.
Tony Zucco, Vice President of Operations at Thomas Landscape and Design said they were notified last week that they were being put on allocation, which turned into them not getting any salt at all.
"We were told at the beginning of the week that we would not be receiving any deliveries when we asked why or what was going on, they give us the same excuse that they don't know what's going on."
He said that although they still have salt available, things can change fast especially if we keep seeing the weather that we've been having in Rochester.
"It definitely makes me nervous," Zucco added.
Sean Fico with A.P. Enterprises told News 8 that he has found a new supplier for the time being, but it hasn't been the easiest transition, "At that point we're paying more, we're not their customer we didn't sign up at the beginning..."
Fico said he can be paying from $20-$35 a ton more. Adding that they can't go back to their customers and ask for more money, since they hired them to do a job - and he wants to make sure A.P. Enterprises finishes per the contracts.
News 8 has also reached out to the New York State DOT to see how/if they are impacted.
The responded saying “While the Department is actively monitoring this situation, the traveling public can rest assured that we will have ample supplies of rock salt to maintain highway safety on the state system throughout the current snow and ice season.”
We have reached out to American Rock Salt and have yet to hear back.
