(KRON) -- An axe-wielding killer who attacked random victims in King City in 2022 was sentenced to serve 76 years to life in prison on Friday. Kevin James Powell was convicted by a Monterey County jury of first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder for the brutal axe attack. Last month the jury found the 29-year-old Greenfield man's crimes involved a high degree of cruelty, viciousness, or callousness. Powell's sentence was handed down by Judge Rafael Vazquez. The murder victim and his brother were in King City on September 14, 2022 for work and they stayed at a Motel 6. That night, after returning from dinner at their sister’s house, they stood outside of their motel room talking. Meanwhile, Powell parked his car nearby. The victims paid no attention to Powell because he was a stranger to the victims, prosecutors said. Powell pulled a three-foot-long axe out of the backseat of his car and attacked the brothers with it, prosecutors said. Both brothers ran. One tripped, prosecutors said, and was hacked by the axe. Powell was later arrested in Greenfield for murder and his mother was arrested for allegedly being an accessory after the fact. The killer said he attacked the victims due to a methamphetamine-induced psychosis, prosecutors said.
