Biden appointed Kate E. Brubacher to the job in 2022. The U.S. Senate confirmed her, and she was sworn in in March 2023. The position is usually a four-year term.
Brubacher was the first woman to serve as the District's chief federal law enforcement officer.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Kansas has approximately 100 assistant U.S. attorneys and support staff in three offices associated with the federal courts in Wichita, Topeka, and Kansas City. They cover all 105 Kansas counties.

During her appointment, Brubacher has supervised the investigation and prosecution of all federal crimes and the litigation of all civil matters in which the U.S. has an interest in the District of Kansas.

"I leave this position with overwhelming respect for the career attorneys, professional staff, and the dedicated law enforcement officers who work diligently and in good faith every day to protect the public and uphold our Constitution," Brubacher said in a news release. "Together, we focused on confronting the fentanyl epidemic and keeping Kansans safe from violent crime, including crimes against children, and we paid just amounts when there were just claims against the United States."
Brubacher is a native of Newton. She earned her bachelor's degree at Stanford University and her law degree from Yale Law School. She worked for a law firm in New York and then as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Missouri before being appointed U.S. Attorney for Kansas.
"Serving the people in my home state as United States Attorney for the District of Kansas has been a high honor," she said. "I am grateful to President Biden for nominating me. I am also grateful to Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall for their support."
Brubacher did not give the reason for submitting her resignation.
