Minnesota’s Carolyn Wiger makes a splash in the third season of ‘The Traitors’

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the first three episodes of season three of “The Traitors.”
From the very first scene of the third-season debut episode of “The Traitors,” it became clear that North St. Paul native and “Survivor” veteran Carolyn Wiger is going to get plenty of screentime on the show, which streams on Peacock.
And this was before we learned Carolyn would be one of the Traitors, all but ensuring her a starring role. But more on that in a bit.
“The Traitors” follows Carolyn and her fellow contestants as they’re living in a castle in the Scottish Highlands and competing in a series of challenges that earn money for the grand prize of up to $250,000. On the first day, host Alan Cumming secretly selected three of them to become Traitors, while the rest are known as Faithfuls. Each episode, the Traitors vote to “murder” a Faithful, while the entire cast also chooses one of their own to be banished from the show. In the end, if a Traitor is left standing among the final contestants, the Traitor takes home the cash prize.
The show opened with the contestants meeting each other. Carolyn was thrilled and even surprised that fellow “Survivor” alum Tony Vlachos (the second person to win “Survivor” twice, after Sandra Diaz-Twine) and Jeremy Collins (a firefighter who won the 31st season) recognized her. She called them “legends” and revealed her fear that Tony is “super, super strategic … I’m scared.”
Alan then stood in front of the cast with a mysterious masked figure. Turns out it’s “Boston” Rob Mariano, who appeared on multiple seasons of “Survivor,” won once and met his wife on the show. Alan gave the cast the option of adding Rob to the mix, but only if one contestant stepped forward and offered up a fellow contestant to immediately ban.
The cameras quickly cut to Carolyn, who placed third on “Survivor 44.” During her time on that show, she delighted — or annoyed — viewers with her wildly expressive face and manic, jumbled manner of speaking. She’s absolute reality television gold. And she delivered once again by agonizing over whether she should trade Rob for Tony. “Who am I pissing off,” she mused. “Is Jeremy going to be mad at me?”
Carolyn ultimately decided against it and Alan (seemingly) sent Rob packing. From there, the contestants spend time sussing each other out and figuring out the identities of some of the lesser-known cast members, like Britney Spears’ hunky, greasy haired ex-husband Sam Asghari.
One by one, the contestants sat down with Alan to talk about whether they wanted to be chosen as a Traitor. Carolyn rolled her eyes when Tony told her he wanted to be a Faithful: “That’s bull—-! What are you guys here for? Don’t tell me you’re not here to play.”
When it came time for her own heart-to-heart with Alan, Carolyn blurted out that “of course I want to be a Traitor! Do I have to beg? What do you want me to do?” Alan’s response: “Don’t beg.”
And, well, she didn’t have to. When it came time for Alan to choose the Traitors in a secretive ceremony, he selected Carolyn along with Bob the Drag Queen (one of the most successful performers to come from “RuPaul’s Drag Race”) and “Big Brother” vet Danielle Reyes. They wouldn’t learn of each other’s status as Traitors until the end of the first episode, which made for some interesting interactions among the trio.
Needless to say, Carolyn was more than happy to hear the news. “I want to jump up and down, I want to scream,” she gasped. “This is what I’m here for!”
Peacock released the first three episodes of “The Traitors” Thursday night and plenty happened along the way, including the Traitors murdering “Real Housewives” stars Dorinda Medley and Chanel Ayan, the cast banishing Wells Adams from “The Bachelorette” and Tony from “Survivor” and Alan figuring out a way to get Rob into the cast alongside previously unannounced contestants Derrick Levasseur (“Big Brother”) and Wes Bergmann (“The Real World: Austin”). “Oh my gosh, I can’t stand that a——,” Carolyn declared about the latter.
Oh, and Rob is also a Traitor, as the trio learned at the top of the third episode.
So far, Carolyn has proven to be savvy, if scattered, as a Traitor, even as she bickered with them over who to murder. While both Danielle and Bob the Drag Queen talked too much and attracted some suspicion as possible Traitors, none of the cast even considered Carolyn might be one. Indeed, producers included several scenes of contestants confidently announcing Carolyn was definitely not a Traitor.

Of course, that could change at any time and it’s not out of the realm of possibility that her fellow Traitors will turn on Carolyn. If nothing else, she’s making the most of her time on the show while she’s still there, with monologues like this one she delivered after the Traitors murdered Chanel:
“I’m feeling like an a——. I didn’t want to murder her. But it’s like people don’t listen to me. I am the type of person who will always be the misfit, the person that nobody listens to. It’s been like that in my real life. I’m always like this turd on the wall. But this turd will get to the end, it’s true.”
Peacock will release new episodes of “The Traitors” at 8 p.m. each Thursday through March 6. NBC plans to broadcast the show as well, starting with the first two episodes at 7 p.m. Jan. 20.
