Hanover’s first water test shows ‘no harmful contaminants,’ boil water advisory still in effect
Jan 10, 2025
HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Hanover County's first water test results on Friday show no harmful contaminants, however, parts of the county are still under a boil water advisory.
On Friday, Jan. 10, Hanover County announced that no harmful contaminants were detected in the county's initial water-quality testing.
"If the second round of testing confirms the water is safe to consume, the County anticipates the Virginia Department of Health will lift the boil water advisory for areas east of I-95 on Saturday afternoon," the county said in its statement.
The boil water advisory, issued on Tuesday for parts of Hanover County, was the result of water service disruptions caused by a power outage at the City of Richmond’s water treatment facility, which supplies water to Hanover, Henrico and Chesterfield counties.
According to the county, residents east of Interstate 95 should continue boiling water for drinking and cooking until the advisory is lifted. Residents living west of I-95 do not need to boil water.
The county advises that water should be brought to a rolling boil for one minute and cooled before use.
Hanover County is continuing to provide free water to residents at the following locations:
Friday, Jan. 10 until 6 p.m.
Bottled water distribution
Cold Harbor Elementary School, located at 6740 Cold Harbor Rd.
Atlee High School in the Football Field Parking Lot, located at 9414 Atlee Station Rd.
Potable water fill-up station
Old Winn-Dixie in Mechanicsville, located at 7189 Stonewall Parkway
Saturday, Jan. 11 from 1 to 5 p.m.
Bottled water distribution
Atlee High School, located at 9414 Atlee Station Rd.
Potable water fill-up station

According to the county, water distribution will continue until the boil water advisory is lifted.
“We understand that everyone is eager to get back to normal, and we appreciate your continued patience during this process,” said Matt Longshore, Director of Public Utilities. “Our team is working closely with health officials to ensure the water is completely safe, and we will notify the community immediately once the boil water advisory is lifted.”
