NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — New Bedford's Bob Branco gets together virtually every Monday night to talk sports with some of his closest friends. Branco, who was born legally blind, told 12 News he hosts the weekly Zoom podcast with two friends from New Jersey and California. His friends are also visually impaired, which he believes makes their podcast unique. "One day a few of us got together and said, 'Let's start a podcast. Let's start a sports show,'" he recalled. "We used Skype, but now we use Zoom." Branco said the trio has had some big names on the show, such as former Boston Red Sox pitchers Bill Lee and Jim Lonborg. "I have a lot of friends who talk sports with me," Branco said. "We have a lot of discussions about our favorite teams." The 67-year-old told 12 News there was actually a time in his life where he could see. "I had vision when I was younger," he explained. "I was able to see color. I was able to see the sun and the moon ... shadows and lights." While Branco spends most of his time listening to games on the radio and prepping for his podcast, he also has another passion. "I like to bowl," Branco said. "I've been bowling for 30-plus years." "As long as I'm directed by someone sighted, I'm able to bowl pretty well," he continued. Branco runs and participates in the Teddy Bear Bowling League, which gives those with disabilities the opportunity to partake in the sport. "But if you don't have a disability, you are still welcome to be a part of it," Branco added. His lifelong goal has been to raise awareness for the visually impaired. "I think a lot more should be said about our disability publicly, so people can learn about it and realize there are a lot of things people with disabilities can do," Branco said. The Sports Roundtable Podcast airs Mondays at 5 p.m. EST. Anyone interested in tuning in should email Branco for the Zoom link. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
