KAHULUI, Hawaii (KHON2) -- Hawaiian Electric crews are responding to multiple power outages on Maui due to severe thunderstorms passing through the island. HECO emphasized that the outages are storm-related and are not part of the Public Safety Power Shutoff program. Maui schools close due to weather conditions Crews are working to conduct damage assessments in safe areas to do so but customers should plan for potential extended outages. All power lines must be inspected for damaged equipment before power can be safely restored. "Hawaiian Electric understands that people need to know when their power will be restored, and we will keep the public updated on the progress of our restoration efforts," HECO said in a news release. In an 11 a.m. update, HECO announced they restored power to Kahului and Central Maui customers. By noon, power was restored to 16,000 customers in parts of South Maui, Makawao, West Maui and Central Maui. Crews are working to restore power for the remaining 5,000 residents in portions of South Maui, Kula and West Maui. If there are any downed power lines in your area, report them by calling (808) 871-7777. Dangerous situations such as sparking electrical equipment should be reported to 911.
