FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -- As snow and freezing temperatures grip the area, Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control is reminding pet owners to take extra precautions to keep their animals safe from the cold.
The agency advises limiting the time your pets spend outdoors to nothing longer than 15 minutes.
Prolonged exposure to the cold can lead to hypothermia or frostbite, especially in smaller breeds, senior pets and those with short coats.
When outside, pet owners should avoid icy areas to prevent injuries and make sure to clean their pets' paw afterwards to remove salt or de-icing chemicals.
Pet owners are also encouraged to provide proper shelter for outdoor animals, ensuring they have a warm and dry space protected from the wind.
Additionally, they should check under their vehicles before starting them, as stray cats and small animals often seek warmth near car engines.
“Before you start your car, give the hood a few taps or check underneath,” said Tyna Reiter, a representative from Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control said. “Cats and small animals often seek out the warmth of the engine, and this simple step can help prevent a tragic accident.”
FWACC stresses the importance of watching for signs of frostbite and hypothermia such as shivering or lethargy and advises contacting a veterinarian if any concerns arise.
