EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — University Medical Center of El Paso (UMC) is celebrating its 110th anniversary of serving the community by hosting a birthday celebration this weekend. The event will happen from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11 at the El Paso Convention Center in Downtown El Paso. The celebration is free to the public and free "goodies" will be given to the first 2,000 attendees. According to UMC, there will be a clear bag policy enforced during the event. The community can enjoy food, giveaways, activities, entertainment, informational booths and free health checks. In addition to the family fun, children can enjoy a "kids' corner" with face painting, a cake walk and jumping balloons. According to UMC, the County and City of El Paso will be on-site with family-fun activities. UMC opened in 1915, at the time known as El Paso County General Hospital with only 100 beds. In 1963, the new 335-bed hospital was named R.E. Thomason General Hospital, in honor of Robert Ewing Thomason, former mayor of El Paso and a district judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas, according to UMC. The hospital was rebranded as University Medical Center of El Paso in 2009. For more information of the event, you can visit UMC's website here.
