GARRISON, ND (KXNET) — One of North Dakota's last remaining World War II veterans was honored this week for the sacrifices he has made for our country.
Harold Robert Edwards, also known as Dee, was honored on Tuesday in a veteran pinning ceremony at Benedictine Living Community in Garrison through a partnership with We Honor Veterans.
The ceremony, which honors wartime veterans who are in hospice care, presented Edwards with an American flag emblem that was pinned on his left collar. He was also given a patriotic pillowcase.

Edwards served in the Navy on the USS Black Hawk from 1944 to 1946, and his service took him to China as well as Okinawa, Japan.
Harold says one of his proudest moments during the war was helping rescue sailors who were left stranded in the ocean due to a Kamikaze attack.
"There were 12 guys in the water, there they said from that ship we picked up nine, which were alive, two of them were dead, and one we couldn't find, the hero is still out there yet," said Edwards.
