Woman whose dogs were poisoned in Dickinson describes life after case is settled

DICKINSON, ND (KXNET) — A woman from Dickinson whose dogs were recently poisoned says the case has now been settled, but the situation has been a nightmare for her family.
Tessa Nelson and her husband say in May of last year, their daughter noticed their two dogs were playing with something strange in the yard.
She says her daughter picked up what was a ball of ground beef laced with green pellets, which were found to be an underground rodent killer.
Previously, Nelson said their neighbor, James Sawvel, had complained to them about their dogs, Bruno and Odis.
Both dogs were taken to the vet, but they were unable to save the German Shepherd, Bruno.

Nelson says Odis suffered permanent damage, she and her family have also had to move, they say, to get away from Sawvel.
"It's hard to explain to kids and go through therapy and try to deal with the loss that was so brutal. And so, the main thing is that even though he has to pay a fine or maybe serve some time, he has created irreversible damage and that's something that we have to live with, and he's not sorry about it. That's the worst part, he doesn't have remorse," Nelson said.
Nelson says she's grateful her daughter didn't touch the poisoned meat with her bare hand or she may have suffered permanent liver damage, based on what they were told by a researcher at the veterinarian.
Sawvel pleaded guilty to two felony counts of animal cruelty, he must serve 90 days in jail, and he'll be on supervised probation for three years.
