Abbott says if there's a name change, 'Gulf of Texas' is 'the move'

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Governor Greg Abbott is getting in on the debate surrounding the potential renaming of the Gulf of Mexico.
President-elect Donald Trump said Tuesday that he would move to try to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” per reporting from the Associated Press. This has sparked a lot of conversation and debate online over what the Gulf should be renamed to, if at all.
One person shared a photo on X showing the Gulf with a graphic referring to it as the "Gulf of Buc-ees," complete with a "Nugget Bay," in place of the Bay of Campeche.
Abbott jumped in on the conversation, saying that the "Gulf of Texas" is the way to go.
The governor of Texas, a state known for its pride in itself, re-shared a post from The Salty Dog Galveston that had a map depicting the gulf as the "Gulf of Texas."
Abbott said in the post, "If we are going to rename things ….… this is the move."
Can Trump rename the Gulf of Mexico?
It remains unclear whether or not Trump can actually go through with the name change. It would be a complex process, and the AP reported that even if it were to go through, other countries wouldn't have to go along with it.
Trump would have to submit a proposal to the U.S. Board on Geographical Names, which is part of the U.S. Geological Survey.
However, according to the USGS, there must be a compelling reason to change the name of a natural feature.
A proposed name change for the Gulf of Mexico would also require international acceptance from Mexico and potentially input from international organizations, like the International Hydrographic Organization.
