WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - Kansas lawmakers are trying to right a wrong that was caused by a law that they passed. The Kansas Attorney General's Office blocked school bond funding for Greely County after it broke state law by not posting an election notification on a county-owned website. Greely County doesn't have a website. If passed, Senate Bill 2 would get the school district its money so it can make improvements. "It's pretty sad we're having these small school districts dwindle away, and I don't want to see that happen out there, and so I want to help them. The voters have spoken. They want to invest in their community and in their school, so we need to do what we can on our level," said Sen.-elect Tory Marie Blew, bill sponsor. "It was not a hidden election. It was not that it was not well known. It was very well put out there with dates and times. We made numerous trips to the senior center and around town talking to people. We held forums, we did three or four articles in the newspaper," USD 200 Superintendent John Niehues, said. Kansas attorney general blocks school bond funds in state’s smallest county Blews hopes to pass the bill in the first 30 days of the session, which starts on Monday. The legislature could change the requirement with new or amended legislation, giving the district access to the money. The district could hold another election, but there is no guarantee voters would approve the bond. The district could also take the State of Kansas to court. The bond is intended to go towards a new gym, handicap-accessible locker room and fully accessible playground. For more Kansas news, click here.
