OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - EMSA is reminding residents to take proper precautions when going outside in cold weather. On Thursday, EMSA says crews in the Oklahoma City area responded to five cold exposure calls and took four people to local hospitals. Paramedics and EMTs also responded to 40 traffic accidents and took 12 people to local hospitals. LOCAL NEWS: EMSA: Medical emergency calls increase during winter weather, take precautions EMSA is reminding residents to take precautions when going out in the cold to avoid hypothermia, frost bite and falling on ice: Heavy Coat Hat Gloves Layers Warm Boots or Shoes with Traction Officials say hypothermia can occur when the body loses heat faster than it can create heat. A normal temperature is around 98.6 degrees, hypothermia can happen when your body temperature falls below 95 degrees. Warning signs of hypothermia include: Slurred Speech  Shallow Breathing Weak Pulse Lack of Coordination Drowsiness  Confusion LOCAL NEWS: 4Warn Storm Team tracking temperatures, road conditions across Oklahoma According to EMSA, frostbite can happen when you do not wear the proper clothing for sub-freezing temperatures. Fingers, toes, facial features and ears are the most likely places for frostbite to occur. In bitter temps, frostbite can happen in as little at 15 minutes. Children and older adults are most susceptible to frostbite. Signs of frostbite include: Cold Skin and Prickling Feeling Numbness Skin that Looks Different than Normal Hard or Waxy Looking Skin Muscle Stiffness For more winter safety tips, visit emsaok.gov.
