NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A 23-year-old woman is expected to face charges after being struck by a vehicle while walking across I-64 early Friday morning. According to officials, just before 3 p.m., troopers responded to the eastbound lanes on I-64, near the intersection of Atkinson Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue, for reports of a crash involving a pedestrian. Troopers arrived to the scene and found that the pedestrian, later identified as 23-year-old Lela Evangeline Butler, was suffering from serious non life-threatening injuries in relation to the crash. She was then transported to Riverside Hospital. An investigation revealed the Butler was traveling eastbound along I-64 when she claimed her dog jumped from the vehicle. Butler then pulled over to the right shoulder and proceeded to walk across the interstate searching for her dog, police said. While Butler was crossing the interstate, the driver of a 2017 Hyundai Genesis, also traveling eastbound, struck her. Police said Butler was found to be intoxicated, and is expected to be charged upon her release from Riverside. The driver of the Genesis was found to not be at fault. A dog was not found near the scene, police said. Continue to check WAVY.com for updates.
