Rain, strong winds, and cooler weather expected across Gulf Coast today

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Rain and gusty winds will impact the region today as a strong low-pressure system moves closer to the Gulf Coast.
Wind gusts are expected to reach up to 40 mph in some areas, prompting a Wind Advisory for locations near the coast and south of Lake Pontchartrain through 6 p.m. this evening. Inland areas, including parts of Mississippi and the Florida Parishes, could see breezy conditions but are unlikely to meet advisory-level criteria.
Rain will be widespread throughout the day, with occasional heavy downpours possible, particularly in areas near Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and South Mississippi.
By late afternoon, drier air will begin moving into western parts of the area, with rain tapering off by mid-evening.
Temperatures will drop sharply behind the rain. Highs will fall into the 50s this afternoon and drop to the upper 30s overnight.
Saturday will bring cooler weather, with highs in the 40s and clearing skies by afternoon. A brief warming trend begins Sunday, but another round of showers is possible later in the day as another weak weather system develops in the Gulf.
