Lexington officials are contending with the second bout of winter weather this week. The National Weather Service expects an extra three-to-six inches of snow across Kentucky. A winter storm warning is in effect for central Kentucky until early tomorrow. Lexington is extending its snow emergency protocols until Monday. That means the city is activating its Emergency Operations Center and putting its public safety divisions on 24-hour schedules. No extra ice or sleet is expected. Lexington Streets and Roads Director Rob Allen says road crews are working 12-hour shifts to clear the city’s busiest roadways and bus routes. They have 6,200 tons of salt on hand and a tanker of beet juice to clear the roads. “The plan is not designed to treat every road in Lexington. We just can’t do that,” Allen said. “But if folks have a dangerous situation, we have been responding to all calls for dangerous intersections or hills. Those things are resources permitting.” City officials recommend avoiding travel in the meantime. They recommend cleaning the windshields, windows and rooftops of vehicles if necessary, and keeping an emergency kit on hand. Lexington’s emergency plan for its homeless population has been extended until Friday. Commissioner of Housing Advocacy Charlie Lanter says 360 people are staying in hotels to keep safe. “As we know, the snow is coming this weekend. But then, if you look ahead to the forecast, the extraordinary temperatures are going to continue through all of next week,” Lanter said. Lexingtonians in need of shelter can call the United Way’s 211 hotline. The city’s call center can also be dialed at 311 to report someone who needs assistance. ** WEKU is working hard to be a leading source for public service, and fact-based journalism.
