I'm not sure the last time I didn't write a blog...I know we've been going for roughly 12 straight days and odds are today will be the last one till next Tuesday...a lot of writing and more writing and more writing. Thanks for all the kind words over the past couple of weeks in this very active pattern. Next week things should settle down for a few days as some arctic air comes back into the area on Monday for a few days before easing (briefly) later next week. View the latest Weather Alerts in the Kansas City region on FOX4 We're going to be vulnerable though for more cold air shots for the next couple of weeks, however, and we may be setting up for more wintry weather as well this month. The system that is finished with us from last night laid down another 2-3" of widespread snow in the area with 3-5" totals south of the Metro. Pretty impressive to get snow on top of snow. When we had winters in the past that, in their totality, didn't produce 4" of snow, we seem to be getting snow like crazy this month. There is another system coming our way tomorrow evening and night. It's a cold front that will create a line of snow or mix showers that won't last too long but perhaps can again add just a bit of snow accumulation... as the weather beat goes on around these parts. Forecast Today: Cloudy this morning with some sunshine this afternoon with highs in the lower 30s. Perhaps there's some upside to help melt the snow a bit. Tonight: Fair and colder with lows in the teens Tomorrow: Mostly sunny and chilly with highs in the lower 30s. There is a snow or mix chance tomorrow night Sunday: Clearing out and chilly with highs in the lower 30s FOX4 Newsletters: Sign up for daily forecasts and Joe's Weather Blog in your inbox Discussion It took a bit of time last night to get the snow to become more widespread, but some decent-sized flakes were coming down for a while. Roads, especially the main ones, fared better than other roads if they had treatment. So conditions today are varied in the area. I measured 2" on my driveway, and it seems 2-3" is what's common for most in the area. Here are some totals. The best snows from this were mostly south of the US 50 corridor down towards I-44 where the Springfield area had 4-6". This morning our winter storm, which we were on the northern fringe of, is taking the worst of the weather into the SE part of the country. See the latest forecast, maps and radar for Kansas City Winter storm warnings are in effect for areas there and elsewhere, with a large area of winter weather advisories this morning as well. Roughly 52% of the country is covered in snow this morning. Very interesting that we have way more snow on the ground along the I-70 corridor than areas towards the northern US in MN and WI. KCI had at least 2.4" of snow...likely a bit more...so their seasonal total is 14.5" now. How does that compare to others in the region? We're had more than Chicago, more than Minneapolis, more than Des Moines, more than Omaha and Lincoln, NE, more than most in SD and ND, and more than Green Bay and Milwaukee. Impressive January for sure! As far as the next system goes, it's weak and really shouldn't amount to much, but a wintry mix of some snow or even perhaps some raindrops is possible tomorrow evening and night for a few hours as a cold front comes into the region. Temperatures aloft aren't that great for snow to reach the ground, so it doesn't look like a significant system for us. This is due to a wind shift sliding through. The true cold air though will move in Sunday evening into Monday. FOX4 Newsletters: Sign up for daily forecasts and Joe's Weather Blog in your inbox This will be a glancing blog of arctic air that will linger into Tuesday morning before retreating somewhat for about 12 hours ahead of another glancing blow. So temperatures for early next week will remain well below average, with some colder mornings coming with all the snow on the ground helping to reinforce the cold air overnight with a light wind regime. We may also be setting up for some low stratus cloud formation with a moist low-level air mass as we try to melt the snow to some degree. Something to watch for. Also of note, we need to watch the 19th and 20th for some sort of wintry system. We may be setting up for something; whether that is a bigger storm or not, I can't tell, but this would usher in more cold air for about 5 days or so. The bottom line is no rest of the weary, although most of next week is OK aside from the temperature fluctuations. OK...I'm off on Monday and odds are no blog then...so I'll probably visit with you again on Tuesday. The feature photo comes from Savannah Whitesell. Joe
