HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) -- A suspect is in the hospital after crashing their car in front of a church while leading Horry County police on a chase through the city of Conway, authorities said Thursday.
At about 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, an Horry County officer noticed a black Nissan Altima pass by him, according to a police report. The driver committed a traffic violation, then looked away quickly from the officer and it "appeared that he attempted to conceal his face behind his arm."
The report notes that behavior is "commonly associated" with criminal activity in the officer's experience and it raised suspicion. The officer tried conducting a traffic stop on the vehicle as it pulled into a gas station on the corner of Highway 378 and Mill Pond Road.
The vehicle then took off at a high speed and led the officer on a chase through Conway before it wrecked into a fence in front of Kingston Presbyterian Church at the end of 3rd Avenue and Kingston Street, according to the report. A search of the suspect's vehicle found a Glock with a switch on it, which the suspect was holding. It was confirmed stolen out of Florence.
The suspect, whose name was not immediately available, also had nearly 10 grams of marijuana in his pocket, the report said. Police said he was a repeat offender with previous drug, weapons, and traffic violations.
"HCPD takes the safety of our community seriously," Police Chief Kris Leonhardt said. "We are committed to reviewing the incident and taking any steps that may be deemed necessary based upon that review."
