FLOYD COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) - A woman who police believe helped a man attempt to escape after he allegedly shot an Orange County sheriff's deputy was taken into custody Thursday. The investigation started after midnight Jan. 3 in West Baden Springs, when 33-year-old Austin Schepers got pulled over and allegedly shot a sheriff's deputy multiple times in response. He then fled the scene, which triggered a "Blue Alert" from Indiana State Police in an effort to find him. That's where Victoria Howard, 35, comes into play. Howard is accused of getting Schepers a Lyft from her apartment in New Albany to Louisville, where police found him Jan. 4. Schepers was shot and killed during the confrontation with police; details on how the situation escalated to that point have not been released. Howard was arrested Thursday and taken to the Floyd County Jail for her alleged involvement. She faces charges of assisting a criminal, a Level 5 felony, and false informing, a Class A misdemeanor. The deputy who was shot was said to be in critical condition but stable. A female passenger who was with Schepers when he allegedly shot the deputy was found shortly afterward and taken into custody. Investigators believe more people will be charged over allegedly helping Schepers while he was wanted by police, according to the release.
