The Constitution Gate off Spur 601 is being renamed in Reyes' honor during a ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday.
Fort Bliss says it is renaming the gate to honor "former Congressman Silvestre Reyes for his contributions to Fort Bliss and the greater El Paso community."
Reyes, a Canutillo native, represented the 16th Congressional District from 1997 until 2013. He is seen as a major player in bringing the 1st Armored Division to Fort Bliss in 2011 and transforming the post into what it is today -- home of America's Tank Division and one of the largest and most important training areas in the Army.
Reyes also served in the Army from 1966-68, seeing combat duty in Vietnam.
The Constitution Gate will be closed until 1 p.m. Friday because of the ceremony, Fort Bliss said in a social media post. People needing to access East Fort Bliss should use the Old Ironsides or Command Sgt. Maj. Barreras gates.
