Weather Headlines: Winter Storm Warning Snow, Sleet & Freezing Rain Icy Spots Linger through the Weekend Cold Continues Discussion: A winter storm warning is in effect from 7am this morning through Saturday morning for the region. Snow will begin to fall in the mountains late morning and spread east through mid-afternoon. Areas near and south and east  of I-85 will see a quicker transition to snow/sleet and freezing rain as a warm nose nudges in from the south. Essentially, surface temperatures will be near or below freezing, but the column of air above the surface will be warmer leading to that change from snow to a mix. This means ice accumulations up to .25″ will be possible which could lead to not only dangerous driving conditions, but also the potential for scattered power outages. Charlotte will see some snow, but with the wintry mix/freezing rain transition early in the evening it will end up being a bit more icy overall with about an inch maybe up to two inches if the warmer air aloft is delayed. The winter storm will clear before sunrise Saturday, for all expect the highest elevations where upslope flow will allow snow to linger for a few more hours. Black ice will be a concern Saturday, but with temperatures warming above freezing Saturday afternoon, we will see some melting, with a few morning icy spots Sunday and Monday due to overnight re-freezing. Snow in the mouNtains and foothills will likely melt by early to mid-week.
