CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - While we may not have seen much rain and snow so far this year, things have improved with our drought situation. Santa Ana winds continue to fuel Los Angeles wildfires Luckily we saw some beneficial rain and snow during the month of December. This past fall western Massachusetts experienced very dry conditions that led to a severe drought. Large brush fires were reported all across Massachusetts during October and November. Finally as we were transitioning from fall to winter we received some beneficial rainfall. "We actually picked up a little bit more rain and that helped us in November and December still below average for those two months but the rain that came, came pretty close to it when it came to the rainfall and that helped us a little bit with the drought," said 22News Storm Team Meteorologist Chris Bouzakis. The wet weather we've been getting has helped out with our drought situation. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor has most of Hampden County and eastern Hampshire County in the Severe Drought Category but most of Franklin County and western Hampshire County have seen some improvement and are now in the Moderate Drought Category. Most of Berkshire County is now in the Abnormally Dry category. The rain and snow we picked up helped to improve streamflow, ground water and soil moisture. Water levels on the Connecticut River have gone up as well. While we did see some beneficial precipitation last month, so far for the month of January it's been pretty dry, we haven't really seen any rain or snow so far this year. Right now it looks like it may stay pretty dry for the rest of this week and going into next week as well.
