NC State Board of Education continues with new temporary rule on high school NIL deals

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — While high school athletes in the state wait for the go-ahead on NIL deals, state leaders made one more step in approving a new temporary rule.
On Thursday morning during their meeting, the North Carolina Board of Education motioned to carry the approval of a new temporary rule for high school students who wish to profit their name, image and likeness.
The new rule will be sent to the Rules Review Commission in the General Assembly for their approval. Their next meeting will be January 30.

In October, a judge overturned the state board's block on NIL deals in a lawsuit filed by the family of Grimsley High School quarterback Faizon Brandon, sparking a need for change in hgih school athletics and NIL deals. Brandon was the No. 1 ranked football prospect at the time in the country for the 2026 class.
