Chicago Boat Show: Longing for those summer days on the lake? Head to Rosemont for the Chicago Boat Show. “Too Hot to Handel — The Jazz-Gospel Messiah”: A 70-member Chicago choir reinterprets Handel’s “Messiah” through the lens of jazz and gospel. Expect backbeats, scat and improvisation, accompanied by a chamber orchestra and a jazz combo, the Chicago Collective Rhythm Section. Vocalists Alfreda Burke, Rodrick Dixon and Karen-Marie Richardson will perform along with Chicago Symphony Orchestra assistant concertmaster David Taylor, CSO cellist Richard Hirschl and pianist Alvin Waddles. George Stelluto of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra will serve as conductor while Fred Nelson III, of Jennifer Hudson’s “Gift of Love” tour, will serve as jazz band leader. Buddy Guy: Buddy Guy, who officially retired last fall, will perform throughout the month of January at his eponymous club in the South Loop. Andrew Santino: Actor and comedian Andrew Santino, a Chicago native known for his roles in Peter Farrelly’s “Ricky Stanicky” movie and the FX series “Dave,” brings his “Freeze Peach” tour to the Chicago Theatre. Professional Bull Riders: More than 30 bull riders of PBR attempt to buck their way to victory in an Unleash the Beast competition. Cecilia Beaven: Explore the work of Cecilia Beaven, a Chicago-based visual artist who hails from Mexico City. A Fulbright scholar with a master’s degree from the School of the Art Institute, Beaven’s work is on display at both the National Museum of Mexican Art and the Hyde Park Art Center. In Pilsen, her solo exhibit, “Semilla” (seed), considers how Mexican folk art and Aztec mythology inspire Beaven’s work. Denude: Math-rock band Denude hosts a record release show to debut its latest, “A Murmuration of Capitalist Bees.” The trio of James David, Jesse Schomisch and Matthew Parrish has deep roots in the Chicago and Milwaukee underground scenes. “Shucked”: The first national tour of “Shucked” opened in Chicago this week, deemed by the Tribune as a hilarious musical set in a rural town in fictional Cobb County where the corn isn’t growing properly and a local couple is struggling to get along. It was written by Robert Horn, who also wrote the book for the Broadway adaptation of “Tootsie,” and directed by Broadway stalwart Jack O’Brien. Through Jan. 19 at the CIBC Theatre, 18 W. Speed Rack: Watch as women and femme-identifying bartenders compete in timed challenges to determine the fastest and most skilled mixologists.
